Mar del Plata is a port of provincial public use, administered by a delegation under the Port Authority Bonaerense.

The port is comprised of various docks and breakwaters distributed over an area of calm water materialized by the north and south jetties. The main sectors in which splits are the same: Basins A, B and C (used for fishing vessels and coastal vessels overseas respectively) yacht anchorage and dock submarines. On the south there is a breakwater berth for loading / unloading of fuel.

The main activities of Mar del Plata is the capture and export of fishery products, exports of grains and the receipt of fuel.

In mid-1999 the Ministry of Public Works and Services of the Province of Buenos Aires approved the decree which created the Advisory Council for the Port of Mar del Plata. This body took to design a plan for total renovation of the port pointing to grant a regional maritime station and transform it into multipurpose.

The plan also includes the formation of a consortium composed of public sector management and private self-sufficiency and autonomy to be next.

1. Port Type

1. South Sector

It is purely commercial and has three breakwaters called (from north to south): ultramarine (Espigón 3), local (Espigón 2) and fishermen (Espigón 1), as well as a post on the side of combustion inside the breakwater .

Overview
The South Sector is called Dock C is constrained by the breakwaters 2 and 3 and contains the docking sites on 12 and 13 Espigón 3 that are used for loading grain from the silo battery lifting of the National Board Grains.

These silos have a storage capacity of 25,255 tons. and two conveyor belts that feed 8 telescopic tubes whose ends rising 12.50 m above the local zero (gallery of lading).

To the west is a dock used for general cargo, 14 feet to zero and 134 local m. long.

In the fishing vessels operating Espigón 3 tall ships and overseas, with a depth of 30 feet.

The characteristics of the existing foundation of the piers has been created to operate vessels up to 30 feet.

To the south of the breakwater and 2 are the docking sites 8, 9 and 10 reach 503m in length. With depths varying from 22 to 25 feet depending on the sector. They are used to operating general cargo and fuel oil. At the end of this breakwater is the Site 7 with a length of 178 m and a depth between 23 to 27 feet.

The Espigón 2 is inoperable in much of its capacity due to the existence of about 40 vessels fishing in height inactive, some of which are interdicts by court cases, others are abandoned and sunk. The same situation is repeated elsewhere in the port of Mar del Plata.

In the Site 7 has been installed a floating dock (MOSSDOK 2000) which has a length of 144 m., a breadth of 128 m. halaje and a capacity of 5,000 tons. It has two 6-tonne crane. that move in a longitudinal manner along the pier.

Freight Sector

It is located in the Basin of B formed by the coastal sites 5 and 6, located on the north Espigón 2 with a length of 250 meters, which are crossed by a broad gauge railway track, with depths varying between 5 and 17 feet west of a 133m straight and Sites A, B, C and D to the south, on the breakwater, 1 288 m in length and depths between 15 and 21 feet that are used for domestic traffic and fishing.

Fisheries Sector
These are facilities that comprise the so-called Fisher Banquina Espigón and 10 (Basin A) area in which they develop the operations of fishing boats and coastal vessels. It has a total length of 727 m. spring, with depths between 6 and 19 feet crossed by a broad gauge railway track. On the South side is located a synchrolift.

Flammable Sector

Located on the south breakwater, northwest of the pier for operations with liquid petroleum gas (Espigón 7). It has a front of 95 m. to allow ships of Mediterranean style to the operations of oil tankers and / or discharging gas products to plants Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales, Gas del Estado and the plant in the Province of Buenos Aires.

2. North Sector

North of the pier Escollera

Located on the north breakwater, has 220 m. in length and is used for tourist cruises. It is linked to the city of Mar del Plata by a paved road up to the dock.

Submarine Base

Located northwest of the port, protected by a breakwater of 474 m in length beginning at the north breakwater and is reserved for the Argentine Navy.

Outside ports

The access channel has a length of 700 m. An acceptable draft of the order of 30 feet by 120 m wide hearth and slopes with slope 1.3.
